When it comes to vitamin D, “normal” and “optimal” blood levels are not the same. “Normal” vitamin D levels can range from 30-100 nmol/l. “Optimal” range starts at 50 nmol/l. Studies have shown optimal levels of at least 75 nmol/l can improve bone mineral density, lower extremity function, dental health, risk of falls, admission to nursing homes, fractures, cancer prevention, and incident hypertension. Deficiency can lead to low immunity, depression, excessive fatigue, hormonal imbalance, and low bone mineral density. Vitamin D plays a huge role in our overall health, so we make sure to test every patients’ levels to see if supplementation might be needed to achieve optimal levels.
